Bushnell Onix200CR
The Bushnell Onix200CR is a hand held GPS that supports satellite and aerial photography. In fact, you can store up to 12 of these images at any one time. Then you can layer a satellite photo, topo map, compass, and all navigational aids on a single screen with the TruView Navigation. The Bushnell Onix receivers are the only handheld GPS units on the market that give you this capability. With such simple features, the Bushnell ONIX200CR handheld GPS unit is great for hiking and mountain biking.
Some of the other features such as the lighted screen and the 'Durable Rubber Armoring' on the unit is useful as the Onix takes hard drops and bumps but still seems to work great. The rubberized buttons are nice to the touch. Your fingers should grip the unit and the buttons very well, but the buttons can be hard to press with gloves. In addition, the Safe Track function puts the GPS in an energy conserving sleep mode while still maintaining satellite connection. Choosing this mode gives you 40 hours GPS support.
The different screens are easy enough to navigate. There are times that you may have to think about which screens you may need. With only a few button clicks and toggling, you should find the right screen fairly quickly. However, some of the aerial photo that you download may not be too clear, especially if your area has significant tree cover. The topo maps are adequate for most hikers and bikers.
With only 32 MB of user memory, the Onix200 series will accept only 12 images. At first glance this doesn't look too bad: $1 per map or photo, 25 for $20 or an unlimited annual subscription for $79. But after a year you do not own the imagery. You will need to renew your subscription each year to keep downloading images. Based on the layout of the download site, each time you change zoom level, you are charged a different image, thus another map or image. The yearly subscription seems to be the only way to go.
